Resident Networks and Firm Trade*

چکیده
We demonstrate that simply by using the ethnic makeup surrounding a firm’s location, we can predict, on average, which trade links are valuable for firms. Using customs and port authority data on the international shipments of all U.S. publicly-traded firms, we show that firms are significantly more likely to trade with countries that have a large resident population near their firm headquarters. We use the formation of World War II Japanese Internment Camps to isolate exogenous shocks to local ethnic populations, and identify a causal link between local networks and firm trade. We also show that firms are more likely to acquire target firms, and report increased segment sales, in countries to which they are connected. Firms that exploit their local networks also see significant increases in future sales growth and profitability. In sum, our results document a surprisingly large impact of immigrants’ role as economic conduits for firms in their new countries. JEL Classification: F16, F30, G14

متن کاملThe Application of Complex Networks Analysis to Assess Iran's Trade and It's Most Important Trading Partners in Asia
The existing trade models suggest that for tradable goods potential partners can be many, but eventually only one (the one offering the best price) should be selected, therefore relatively few (unidirectional) trade links will appear between countries. If the structure of international trade flows describes as a network, trade link would give rise between countries. This paper exploit recently-...
متن کاملStability of International Production Networks: Is East Asia Special?
Trade relationships built through production chains appear to be lasting due to relation-specific nature of the transactions, compared with the usual transactions of goods sold on the open market. This paper aims to verify such stability of international production networks at the global level, with special emphasis on intra-East Asian trade. A series of survival analyses provide an evidence su...

Abstract Using weekly data for defect rates (proportion of defective output) for all weavers in a Chinese textile firm during a 12 months (April 2003 March 2004) period, we provide some of the first rigorous evidence on the presence and nature of peer effects in the manufacturing workplace. First, a worker is found to put in more effort and improve her performance when she is working with more ...
متن کاملTrade Liberalization, Firm Heterogeneity, and Unemployment: An Empirical Investigation
This paper provides empirical evidence for the interaction between firm-level total factor productivity and trade liberalization as key determinants of firm-level job destruction caused by trade. We also test some key theoretical predictions from Melitz (2003), whose model is used to derive an explicit equation relating firm productivity and trade-induced labor layoff when a country liberalizes...
